Foreign varsities to offer counseling to Nigerian students
SIX foreign universities from the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada respectively said they are in Nigeria to offer free counseling on career choices for prospective students willing to study abroad. The Universities are St. Michaels University, UK; Riverside Military Academy, USA; St Andrews College, Ontario, Canada; The Village Academy, Houston, Texas, USA; Strathallan School, UK and St. Catherine School, Ontario, Canada. Speaking to journalists, the Managing Partner, ALTS Consulting, Mrs. Anthonia Foluke Sawyerr, at the Linden boarding school Expo organized by ALTS Consulting in Lagos said: “We focus our business on studying abroad, assist students who are willing to study abroad, and also take time out to counsel them. “It is our duty to help these students understand their career choices and help them discover if they are suitable for scholarships or not. A lot of people have problems with visa so we give visa guidance and assist them with making payments. “You would be surprised that the population of international students especially from Nigeria is not as high as people have been made to believe. Studying abroad is a global movement and Nigerians are not the only people studying abroad. There are so many other nations going to different countries to study. So many students cross to other countries to broaden their knowledge. If you go to the UK for instance, the largest number of international students is Germans. Nigerian universities cannot hold all the population of people who want to get into higher institutions. “We hold conferences for students and parents so that we can manage their expectations. One important aspect of what we do is that we do school referrals. Schools from the US and UK come to Nigeria to meet with prospective parents and students. Every year, we hold boarding fairs and we try to take advantage of the school representatives that participated by organizing seminars for teachers. The fair is completely free because it is covered by the project. It is a big part of what we do and we really enjoy it,” she concluded.
